WEDNESDAY 'SANTO - The Real Maestranza

The Holy Wednesday, as if by magic, it seems that time has stopped in more than 500 years ago, the city is perhaps one of the most extraordinary days of the year is the day of the workers and the Captain.
With this procession come in very exceptional live the events of Holy Week, which each year manages to convey the 'whole city in a different time, in which the guilds were the center of city life.
.
The event, which the world has not the same, involving the oldest professions in the city, because the name "Maestranza" is derived from the "Masters" or master craftsmen who are part and Title "Royal" in 1806 he was awarded by King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, that gave this title because, during his visit, was impressed by the beauty of the procession.
Formerly the Real Maestranza was a militia when it was abolished, however, remained alive in the form of religious organization and this particular Holy Wednesday "army" will accompany the SS. Sacrament in solemn procession through the streets of the city.
The main character of this and other days it is the captain, a man who has experienced several years of work and sacrifice, and that in this' time, becomes the representative of the people revolve around him all the manifestations of Holy Week.
Each year, several months ahead of Easter, Captain is elected by the different trades and in the same way we elect the Squire, the 'Major Bishop, the Flag and the Guards.
A long and imposing procession, made by the artisans of the city gathered in ten corporations, pulls in two wings in the hands of big candles.
The procession consists of two main routes.
The first, identified by the color black in an atmosphere of great sadness the Real Maestranza announced to the people of Jesus' death but shortly afterwards, in the cathedral, the black and white is replaced by the Real Maestranza, refreshed and full of happiness , leaves the cathedral, accompanying the SS. Sacramento, to announce the release to the city dell' uomo dalla pena del peccato.
.

La mattina del Mercoledì Santo
.
Per tutto il giorno l' abitazione del Capitano si riveste di an 'unusual atmosphere: the whole building is decorated with colorful ribbons and lights, many people are facing balconies, and all' interior is a bustle of people, friends, relatives and acquaintances of the Captain.
All 400 artisans who make up the Real Maestranza, lined up in front of the building.
.
The "Master of Ceremonies" (one of the charges) rose to his house, and together with the family members dressed in typical dress eighteenth century Marsina with the stick from 'golden hilt (which has more than 450 years but unfortunately , to be able to enter the Vatican City, he was recently cut the tip), the cocked hat with black feather, cockade tricolor gold fringe on the belt and sword and shiny leather shoes with gold buckle, the ritual of dressing involving the ex-captains, (witness the continuity of the event), the consul general and the masters of ceremonies.
E 'tradition that the captain wishes to present the balcony, before leaving home.
All Categories expect the Captain to the street below his home and his arrival was announced by three blasts on the trumpet, it triggers the applause of those present.
The President of the Real Maestranza approaches the captain and say a special formula: "Captain, the army is deployed. The honors by reviewing" the Captain then, browse all the Real Maestranza, greeting him with a military salute. Although today the Real Maestranza is no longer a military organization, holds many small signs of the past that were in use when it was still. That greeting is not only the recognition of faculty power of Captain, but an invitation to follow in the procession, which just has to be a pilgrimage of faith.
La Real Maestranza, in procession, he went to City Hall, where the mayor give the master keys to the city. This tradition, in addition to just go back to the '80s, it contrasts with what the captain is because the keys can be made to a foreigner or a tourist, and not as a citizen and the captain, and this rite is far from 'hours in the studio.
The keys, however, has a strictly symbolic value: the captain, from that day until Easter Sunday, will be responsible for the city and wants to, inter alia, stressed the importance which the Captain.
Not every one who holds the key of the city.
Afterwards, all masters, the City Council, goes to the 'hall of the Municipal Library from where the procession. You begin to light the candles, the banner is raised to the sky, and the captain is given the crucifix veiled in black. You start to put together the parade and the sound of drums, you exit the door and from the beginning of the solemn penitential procession.
.

The parade
.
The Procession of the Real Maestranza is one of the oldest of the 'island and the town for this' opportunity is joined in the political, religious and social.
Around 11.15 am, the front door of the library part of the procession. All the "Masters" wear gloves, tie and blacks.

Il Capitano è come se invitasse il popolo to regret his sin, and show the cross, not a sign of distress, but a sign of repentance and deliverance.
Captain then takes care of the sin of all.
The Captain is joined by two brigades in high strength, as if to underline the 'importance of the man. Follow the Captain 's Labarde, with a spear, and the standard-bearer with the flag darkened.
.
.
Behind parade into two wings, holding lighted candles on which is written the name of the class, the other members of the ten categories making up the Real Maestranza in strict black suit, and each category is preceded da un proprio alabardiere (le cui lance sono tutte diverse per ogni categoria) e un proprio portabandiera.
La cravatta e i guanti neri di ogni artigiano vengono sostituiti con quelli bianchi; è il Cerimoniere to change the captain, who also changes his socks in a closet in the sacristy crowded with photographers and camera operators.
The banner, the shield and spears are freed by the ribbons of dark and replaced with white flags in celebration unfold, so you can see the effigies of patron saints.
.

.

.
la Real Maestranza at noon, in a joyful atmosphere changed completely, leaves the Cathedral to the joyful sound of bells and the beat lively, impressive and relentless drums, accompanying the SS. Sacramento led by Bishop a monstrance d 'oro which is carved the figure of St. Michael the Archangel (patron saint of the city), under a canopy, preceded by two censers of incense.
The SS. Sacramento is definitely not the last in order of 'importance, indeed, it is as if the parade would protect standogli behind. All the Real Maestranza is as if "opened the way" to the passage of the Eucharist.
The job of captain, being the representative of the people, this time is different, it seems that headed the procession, with his happy eyes, listing the people that Jesus is now the captain, that 'man, thanks to his martyrdom, is freed from sin and the 'Eucharist, solemnly brought testifies proprio questo.
.

.
After the blessing of the Bishop, the Real Maestranza melts, then to recompose in the darkness of Good Friday evening, to accompany the procession of the Lord of the city.
.

.
the afternoon of Holy Wednesday Captain
.
After the morning, the rest of the afternoon festivities will take place in the Captain's house, sitting on a beautiful chair (which is his authority for that day), in turn receives all categories gli rendono omaggio già a partire dal primo pomeriggio.

Palm Sunday - The Feast of Jesus of Nazareth

Even before the fourth century AD certainly was solemnly recalled the glorious day when Jesus entered Jerusalem, welcomed by a cheering crowd that, as the Gospel tells us, waving palm branches in its wake.
It was precisely this attitude of the crowd in Jerusalem to give his name to the last Sunday of Lent: Palm Sunday, the day that, for both the church and for the people, from the beginning of Holy Week.
.

The palm and olive
.
An ancient tradition, now widespread in much of the Christian world, wants a palm leaf or a sprig of olive trees are kept in every home, to encourage peace and serenity of the family.
in Caltanissetta, as in other towns, this tradition is interwoven with an ancient craft work, carefully handed down from father to son. In fact, the branches of the "female palms" are picked unripe months before the Holy Week and dried in the dark. Only a few days before Palm Sunday are skillfully woven by the virtuoso hands of local artisans with an amazing technique, che da vita a varie forme.
.
LA FESTA DI GESU' NAZARENO
.
L'animazione tipica della festa nel tardo pomeriggio è data dalla processione di Gesù Nazareno, un corteo curioso; la secolare statua di Gesù Nazareno infatti, non viene condotta in processione a spalla o trainata su un semplice carrello, bensì is conducted through the main streets of downtown on a boat colored flowers, in Sicilian dialect called "the abbarcu" (the local name of the flower used primarily in this work).
with this festival is that you want to Caltanissetta recall the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
. The procession

.
That Palm Sunday procession is a very charming and festive, a rainbow of a thousand flowers and thousands of lights, as if by magic, are every year the streets of Old Town, after being a year waiting for this event .
Al tramonto Gesù Nazareno, sulla sua bellissima imbarcazione, esce con difficoltà dal piccolo and low gate of the courtyard of the town library. This step is as if, beyond that door, you will recall the entry of Jesus through the gates of Jerusalem.
A powerful firecracker is lit and shot in the air, announcing to those present the start of the procession.
From Jesus of Nazareth that door down in the impressive way that leads down to the library, and, amid a devoted crowd cheering, will cover the main streets of Old Town. The procession is accompanied by two bands from the city and children with palms and olive branches open the way for the statue, also participate in the procession, dress in tight, members of the fraternity organizer the procession, holding the "bilannuna" (large candles).
.
In late evening the statue, after having walked the streets of the historic center, arrives at the church of Sant'Agata, and a massive and extraordinary abbarcu the right shoulder is brought into the church.
is a spectacle of high value mystical, beautiful his rise to the steep stairs leading to the church.
Just before entering, and completely out of sight of the faithful, a wonderful fireworks show attracts the gaze of the crowd, while the rumble of the traditional "male" startles the hearts of the devotees who greeted Jesus of Nazareth with a caldo applauso.
Only later, around the year 1870, the daughter of Baron Vincent Granara, pointed out that it was unfair to see Jesus died on the very day when he entered Jerusalem gloriously, so, thanks to the encouragement of Baron, was commissioned to an unknown local artist that the current statue for only one year he went in procession, simply decorated with flowers.
But the 'initial idea was to fall, the only statue did not permit more than the presence of overflowing flowers, a sign of the peasants, and so it was decided to put Jesus riding a donkey with flowers, but the idea, being quite funny , was not even implemented.
So it was decided to bring Jesus in a boat procession of flowers, just because he has always been a fisherman, a fisher of souls.

I Biangardi

Il volume presenta, tra l' altro, diverse fonti iconografiche, come documentary evidence of different moments in the life of artists, or sketches made by Biangardi for the construction of some Vare; different photographs accompanying the text testify to the skill of the two artists, showing many of their works.
Biangardi Francis (father) was born in Naples on 23 February 1832 by Vincent, too 'he a sculptor, and Tugno Carolina. We know nothing of his father, nor his artistic stature, nor the works he made.
Francis grows with his family in Musselburgh, village in the province of Caltanissetta, where he probably learned the 'art in his father's shop. Then, as recalled by her niece Adele Amico, who died in 1991, attended the 'academy d 'art of Rome and his name soon became known in Naples.
Meanwhile take a wife a widow who will bring a child: Fortunato.
the death of his first wife he married his fellow villager, Joan Allen.
From this marriage, born in 1861 Vincenzo . In 1864 he moved to Novigrad, in the province of Reggio Calabria, where he leaves a large production of wood carving.
In this city were born three daughters: Sofia, Concetta and Maria Antonietta; latter 's,' s not only remained unmarried, had several children, including Adele. In 1873
Biangardi return to the Musselburgh and Vince still has the 'age of twelve.
This young sculptor has left much evidence of his artistic talent, according to the critics could have done a great career, by far exceeding that of the father had he not died young.
's work on Holy Thursday is thus completed only by Francis, who died in Caltanissetta February 21, 1911. Their bodies rest in peace in the cemetery of Caltanissetta, in the district Angels.
Over the years, through extensive studies, there was an important clarification regarding the spelling of the name of the two sculptors who, officially, it appears to be Biangardi (with the letter G and C as is commonly believed in the past and how, However, it is reported on plate indicating the name of a street of Caltanissetta dedicated to them).
As we have seen, the lives of two artists was very troubled and sad, but one thing is certain: in Caltanissetta they will always be remembered and will always have a special place to 'inner city, having won this heart of a Sicilian great and unique heritage, which now belongs to the whole world.

1883 - 1909: L 'Opera of Biangardi

Thus in 1883 there was a procession with the new group and with those made earlier by Giuseppe Alessi. Each group
old disfigured before the new, beautiful and majestic, and so, from year to year, we wanted to replace the old ones with true works of art, many other groups contributed to the procession, making construction of the new groups, always by talented Biangardi.
Each group was recently renovated and "not The translation "which remained unchanged, having already been performed in Naples in 1853 by a good artist, whose name is unfortunately still unknown, is supposed to be the Neapolitan James Fittipaldi.
groups that were built right after" Veronica are:
in 1884 "in Prayer ' garden" and "The Capture " by order of the millers and pasta makers and gardeners, in 1885 the group " Dinner" and "The Descent "respectively, by order of the bakers and workers in the mine Tumminelli.
In 1886 the two artists moved to Caltanissetta and all walks of life took advantage of it immediately to replace the old ones with new, were built in 1886 and so far three groups, "The Sanhedrin " by order of the mine Testasecca, "The Cyrene, on the orders of Gessai, and" The first fall "by order of farmers together under the brotherhood of Saint Lucia. In 1887 Francis
Biangardi did two projects, on 'The Urn "and" Doom "for that year but failed to find any agreement to their construction. In 1888 it was renovated by the group Biangardi de "La Pieta " by order of the bourgeois class.
On 23 September 1890 cut short the life of the young Vincent Biangardi, who died just Caltanissetta. But not for this Francesco Biangardi retired from his job ... indeed, with groups set up after this year are certainly those in which the Biangardi wanted to express his sorrow: "The Crucifixion " (1891, by order of the butchers), " Sacred Urn" and "Ecce Homo (1892, by order of the clergy, delicatessen, fishmongers and greengrocers), " L 'Sorrows' (1896, by order of the wine merchants and carters)" Doom " (1902, by order Trabonella the mine workers) and for that 'last is said that they were "recycled" Vara de statues taken from "The Sanhedrin", where two years earlier had been removed nine characters to lighten weight.
Before 1893 he still wore in the procession of the groups' Alessio: "Jesus meets his mother" and "The Examination".
were later set aside because they were not likely to be matched to the works of Biangardi.
Until 1886 he carried in procession Christ at the Column "of 'Alessio, and from those' years ceased to march in procession. The construction of
Vara representing " The Flagellation , commissioned in 1888 to Biangardi but only completed in 1909 by some disciples of Biangardi, was added to the other, reaching the final number of sixteen teams.

What Does The Ergoline Bed Do To The Skin

Mine Gessolungo and renewal Veronica's

's November 11, 1881 at 6.00 am, a calamity strikes the city of Caltanissetta, a collapse in the mine Gessolungo; sixty-six the dead, including nineteen children. The survivors, led by the brothers Tortorici ("master builders" of mine) for a personal thanks to God for having escaped the disaster, they wanted to restore the tradition of Holy Thursday, just as happened not long ago.
Nell 'were able to reproduce the following year in an impressive procession, but the group entrusted to them, "Veronica" was very shabby and then built in wood, a material too heavy to shoulder, and so, after the procession of 1882, it was decided to build another.
some time in Caltanissetta, there was news of two artists from Naples, Francesco and Vincenzo Biangardi , residents in the nearby town of Musselburgh, who worked with statues of Our Lady of Miracles and the Madonna del Carmine. These two works, from 'excellent artistic value, they soon become Biangardi famous throughout southern Italy. The nissen
Alfonso Palermo, rector of the church of San Sebastiano, the two artists commissioned a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and the restoration of the statue of San Sebastian. Given the ability of the two artists, was commissioned restoration of the precious statue of the patron saint of Caltanissetta, San Michele Arcangelo, which had never been assigned to anyone.
Alfonso Palermo thought about all the ways to use that precious apportunità to enrich the city's churches with the works of two great artists, and decided to commission a statue of Sant 'Alfonso de' Liguori in the territory to spread the cult of the Holy nissen, but he lacked the means to have a built in wood.
.
The good rector went to Musselburgh,
Mastro Francesco Biangardi asking if he could build a paper mache statue. At first the Biangardi is refused because he had always carved the finest materials, but later, thanks to 'encouragement of Father Langel, a friend of the sculptor, became deeply involved in processing of paper mache and built a beautiful statue of Sant' Alfonso de 'Liguori, still enshrined in the Church of San Sebastian.
's idea of \u200b\u200bcommissioning the Vara the two artists spent Tortorici certainly in the minds of siblings who, after seeing the extraordinary statue of Sant' Alfonso de 'Liguori papier-mâché, they decided that they would be just the Biangardi to realize the new Veronica. La Vara, which cost over 900 pounds at the mine, was not made in paper mache, but with the "mixed", which gave the resistance the wood without excessive weight.
